Making a Mural at Home with Ramiro Davaro-Comas

Hi there!
Today we are kicking off our 2020 Workshop Series!

This week, you can follow along as artist Ramiro Davaro-Comas (with the help of some friends!) teaches you how to create a mural at home with whatever materials you may have. Ramiro was an artist in residence in Indiana, PA a few months ago, and he will be returning once it is safe. During this workshop, he talks about painting the mural at the Hoarce Mann school and how you can go about planning your own mural.

Don’t have a wall to paint? That’s okay! You can use a tarp, wood, pieces of paper, etc.

For this workshop you will need :
- a material to draw / paint on (a wall, paper, an old tarp)
- something to draw / paint with (pen, pencil, marker, paint - old house paint will work)
- a place to make a mess!

We will run through the outline of Ramiro’s workshop, but we encourage you to watch the whole process in the video above!

Meet your instructors!

Ramiro Davaro-Comas runs a traveling art residency program where he takes artists around the country and the world to make murals for communities! He’s currently working on making a sustainable art project in Indiana County. You can see his work online and download a FREE COLORING BOOK at https://www.ramirostudios.com/. He is joined by some extra helpers to get the workshop going!

Step One : HAVE A GOOD SKETCH

Start thinking about what ideas you have in your head! What kind of colors do you want your mural to use? Make sure you sketch out a good idea on a piece of paper or on the computer. It helps to have a solid foundation to create from as you move forward with your mural. Have your good sketch and a good idea next to you while you begin painting on the wall. It’s a great reference!

Step Two : MAKE A GRID ON THE DRAWING

A grid is a great way to section your sketch so that the composition comes out exactly how you want it!

Step Three : FREE HAND

You can also draw it free hand! Both processes are used by professionals. It really just depends on your preference!

Step Four : PAINT YOUR MURAL!!!

You can sketch it out on the wall first using a pen, pencil, or marker (using free hand or a grid) or you can begin applying paint directly to the surface!

Bonus Tip : YOU CAN USE AN OLD TARP OR DROP CLOTH AS YOUR WALL!

You won’t need a plain wall to start creating your mural! You can use an old tarp, drop cloth - perhaps even an old sheet or several pieces of paper taped or stapled together.
