Create art at home!
Our talented artists in residence are sharing their tips and tricks for how to create art at home. From painting a mural at home to filming a narrative film, there are many exciting workshops coming your way. Catch a new workshop here and reserve a free book for your future at home learning! There will be twelve workshops by the end of this process. Be sure to check them all out!
At the end of this series, we will be creating a book to share with local libraries, schools, and community and senior centers. If you would like to reserve a free book for your organization, please contact us at thespruceartresidency@gmail.com!
Artist Matt Brennan runs through four different drawing techniques to help you either get started in drawing, or strengthen your craft! Matt shows us that there is no one right way to draw, and helps us expand our techniques and our ideas of how to draw! The four drawing techniques are: extended arm, blind contour, continuous line, and opposite hand.
Learn about artist Jill Grimes’ process and materials when making cut paper pieces! Jill employs multiple processes in her pieces: cut paper, painting, layering. With this process, you can create cut pieces and continue to add and interchange different types of information as you go!
In this workshop, printmaking artist Rachel Gordon teaches us a bit about linoleum block printing with easy-to-find items! We will be making a two-layer repeat linoleum block pattern. Printmaking is an artistic process that involves transferring an image from one surface (“the matrix”) onto another surface (“the print”). Printmaking allows the artist to make limitless copies of their artwork, making the pieces more accessible and easily distributed.
Scott Isenbarger explores allegory in painting, and walks us through his dry brush technique in oil painting!
Lindsey Palmer shows you how you can create a camera obscura, a phenomenon in which you use every day objects to turn any room into a light projection of the outdoors! Project the outside into your home using this ancient technology!
Plein air artist Lesley Wamsley teaches you how to draw in your home using pencils, pen, paper, and more!
Learn how to make two different types of books using every day supplies with Natalie Birinyi!

Adrian shares a little bit about why he thinks the family archive is important and how you can negotiate the past with your current lived experience.
This week, you will learn to create a documentary film with filmmaker Colleen Brady! Throughout this video, Colleen shares how you can structure your documentary film while socially distancing or isolating at home.
We are kicking off our Summer Workshop Series with artists Ramiro Davaro-Comas! You can follow along at home as Ramiro (with the help of some friends!) teaches you how to create a mural at home with whatever materials you may have.
